Series overview:
The Mysterious Cities of Gold (more commonly known in French as Les Mystérieuses Cités d'or,) is a cult-classic anime that was developed in France, and animated in Japan, to be later released in 1982.
The story, taking close inspiration from Scott O'Dell's novel "The King's Fifth", follows the adventures of a young boy named Esteban, a young Inca girl named Zia, and another boy named Tao, a descendant of an ancient civilisation named Mu (or "Hiva" in the English dub). They are accompanied by three adults: a navigator named Mendoza, and his sailors Pedro and Sancho. They are pursued by Gaspard and Gomez, two conquistadors who care only for gold, and who will stop at nothing to lay their hands on those cities. ...Will they get there before our heroes? :)
Production:
This series runs for four seasons in total, the second season being released back in 2012, by BlueSpirit Studios. The next seasons were released in 2016 and 2020.
Additionally, some manga books of Season 1 have been released by KAZÉ.
When their contract expired, NHK lost the original Japanese audio for the series. To rebroadcast the series in Japan in 1998 through 1999, they redubbed each episode, with a new cast save for the main character, Esteban.
